English Elocution 2023

Like every inter-house competition, the English Elocution is a much awaited one. Students from classes 6, 7, 8, and 9 and captivated the audience with their speaking skills. The judges were Mrs. Vijayalakshmi Shivaram, who is an accomplished educationist and artist and Mrs.Kavita Kurian who is known for her passion for books and the impact that reading has on children.

Class 6 began the event with their humorous poems. Arianna Clovis Mascarenhas from Narmada selected The Tummy Beast by Roald Dahl and won this round.

Class 7 had to recite a prose extract by an Indian author. This round was won by Anaisha Bhatla of Narmada and she had chosen from My Failed Omlettes – And other Disasters by Ruskin Bond.

Class 8 entertained the audience with excerpts from Greek, Indian, Norse or Roman mythology.The top place was shared by two speakers , Khushi Chhabria of Cauvery and Anupama Janakiraman of Narmada who delivered a monologue as Helen of Troy from Dr.Faustus by Christopher Marlowe and an excerpt from The Serpent’s Revenge from Unusual Tales from The Mahabharatha by Sudha Murthy respectively.
The last round was by Class 9 students. This was won by Jia Ranka from Sutlej and she recreated a speech by Greta Thunberg at the UN Climate Action Summit.

After an exciting afternoon the overall winners were announced. Narmada came out on top, followed by Godavari and Sutlej finished third, ahead of Cauvery who placed fourth. It was evident that every speaker had given it their best to put on a great show for everyone. This was the result of hard work both by the students as well as the teachers in charge and the house teachers. The students had learnt some life-skills and gained self-confidence as was rightly mentioned by one of the judges.
