Facilities at Sishya

Computer Science Department

Computer Science lessons were introduced in the late 80’s. The school rented the computer on a weekly basis for the duration of the lesson. The Computer Science teacher would arrive by auto with a huge PC and a couple of boys would help her unload it, carry it up to the library and at the end of the class, carry it back to the waiting auto. Today Sishya has two state-of-the-art computer labs with 30 computers each. The entire campus is WiFi enabled to make every classrooms a “smart classrooms”.

 

Counselling Department

The Counselling Department was started in 2000 Over the years it has evolved into a fully fledged Unit and it offers its services to students, teachers and parents alike. Classes 5 to 11 meet the counselors once every week. Leadership and Career Counseling workshops are organised every year for Classes 10 and 12; experts in various fields are also invited to address the students on important subjects like mental well being, AIDS awareness, cyber safety and substance abuse.

 

English department

The English department is the jewel in Sishya’s crown, with victory at the International English Olympiad being one of its crowning glories.

 

Geography Department

Geography lessons replete with maps, models, and projects have often made dry topics come alive. Students are encouraged to explore and research, with invaluable insights coming from field trips, talks, and educational tours . A curricular off-shoot, the Environmental Club to encourage responsible behaviour and promote environmental awareness, was set up in 2004.. Solar panel campus lighting was introduced and a greywater recycling plant set up with the 5-lakh prize money which the club won in an inter-institutional competition at IIT. Other environmental projects such as source segregation , solar panels and composting are also followed.

 

History and Civics Department

Bearing testimony to the spirit of student engagement with subjects, particularly History and Civics, is Sishya’s Mock United Nations session (SishMUN) started in 2005 .This platform for active learning that promotes sensitivity and insight into national and world affairs has been a roaring success. SishMUN became a regular event in 2007. In the years 2005 and 2011, this event took the students of Sishya to Sri Lanka for an invigorating meeting of minds.

 

Junior Science Lab

The Junior Science Lab was set up in 1994. The laboratory is wet up for hands on experiments by the young scientists in Physics, chemistry and Biology.

 

Language Department

The Language Department of Sishya offers Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil and French, as second language options. Language immersion is facilitated through Performing Arts and Literature.

 

Mathematics Department

The strong suit of Sishya academics, the mathematics department has been witness and participant to a number of unique experiments with math pedagogy and learning. In keeping with its innovative approach towards math education, Sishya volunteered to be a part of a pan-India math program and club called HeyMath! which set up its Sishya chapter in 2011. Math Olympiads are a regular feature at Sishya.

 

Physics and Chemistry Department

The Physics Department sent its first batch for the ISC exam in 1988. Saroja Srikanth set up the Senior Physics Lab assisted very ably by Subramanian (a lab assistant who retired from IIT Madras). The first batch of Chemistry students appeared for ICSE under Lalitha Thiagarajan. The department organized the first ever Science Olympiad in Sishya and also sent students for the Australian Chemistry Quiz The Library was originally housed in the parlour in the Administrative Block which is now part of the French section. It now resides in the Thangam Thomas Library Block and houses over 17000 books, a multimedia section with CDs and DVDs, and the school’s trophies.
