The 13th edition of the Sishya Model United Nations Conference – SISHMUN 2019 was held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of October earlier this year. With two new committees, UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and SPECPOL (Special Political and Decolonization Committee), and fresh agendas pertinent to problems faced in the world today, SISHMUN attracted more than 700 participants from 49 different schools from Tamil Nadu.
The opening ceremony of the conference was graced by the presence of Mr.Mark Van de Fraken, the Chief Guest and the Consul General of Belgium, and Mr. Sanjay Pinto, the Guest of Honor. Both gentlemen made compelling speeches about the world and what we, as young adults, could do to help. Mr. Pinto’s speech, especially, was received with loud applause and was the talk of the conference over the next few days.
The committees in themselves were all successes with each committee passing either a resolution, working paper or press communique for each and every agenda. The average size of the committees was 65 delegates, each with something to say and value to add to the discussion. Overall, the committees progressed quickly and without stagnation and the general feedback from all the participants is that they had a memorable, productive and fun conference. At the end of the conference, PSBB KK Nagar took home the best school award and the delegates of India, again from PSBB KK Nagar, took home the best delegation award.
