The sixth Annual Sishya Model United Nations (SISHMUN-2012) was held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of October 2012. Around 400 delegates attended the conference, making it the largest edition yet. These delegates were from 26 schools, from Sharjah, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ooty, Vellore and of course Chennai.
The day started with a wonderful opening ceremony, which was well appreciated by all schools. The Chief Guest, Dr. Nirmala Lakshman – Director of ‘The Hindu’ gave an informative speech on India’s role in the United Nations Security Council. Mrs. Lily Thomas inaugurated the ceremony by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
The three days of SISHMUN involved hotly contested debates, thought provoking questions, and a few light hearted moments. The standard of the delegates was remarkably good; debates were hotly contested, with delegates doing their best to protect their nation’s interests and make compromises to reach a consensus on the some of the major issues that plague our world today. By the end of the second day, all agenda topics had been debated upon, with resolutions passed.
Day three was scheduled to be the General Assembly, but there was a surprise for the delegates. A simulated emergency situation was created to test the aptitude, preparedness and crisis solving skills of the delegates.
The delegates from each committee managed to find solutions to the crisis situation, including ones that we hadn’t thought of while devising the emergency. The crisis was solved before the end of the time limit, with delegates reaching a compromise and deciding on an appropriate course of action.
The closing ceremony started right on schedule, and the much anticipated awards ceremony threw up some expected results. Our Principal, Mrs. Omana Thomas and trustee, Mrs. Lily Thomas gave out the prizes to the delegates. The delegation of France represented by the students from Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School and the delegation of United Kingdom represented by the students from P.S.B.B. Nungambakkam walked away with the award for the “Best Delegations”. BD Somani (Mumbai) won the best Outstation School Award, while Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School won the award for Best Chennai School.
