SISHMUN 2014

The Eighth Annual Sishya Model United Nations Conference, also known as SISHMUN, was held on the 5th, 6th and 7th of October 2014. More than 700 delegates attended the conference, from schools all over the country and even from schools located abroad.

The opening ceremony of the conference was held on the 6th of October, after the successful committee meetings on the first day of SISHMUN. The Chief Guest was His Excellency Masanori Nakano, the Consul General of Japan in Chennai, who spoke about his experiences in the UN. The Guest Speaker of the event was Senior Advocate P.V.S. Giridhar and he gave an inspiring speech about the importance of not remaining neutral in times of war. The delegates kept his advice in mind as they left for their various committees, excited about the second day of SISHMUN.

Each committee had delegates engaging in thought-provoking arguments and bringing up new, innovative ideas. The agenda of each committee was discussed daily and on the second day, three committees joined together to form the General Assembly. Delegates brought up valid arguments, though some of the notes passed among them were a great source of amusement to the Executive Board.

On the second day, the committees began as usual – and then an emergency situation was announced, fabricated by the Executive Board, to test the delegates on their reactions in times of crisis. The arguments and debates that played out after the emergency was announced proved their quick thinking, and they were able to pass a resolution to solve the crisis.

The third day of SISHMUN was cut short due to unforeseen circumstances, but the morning session was a success. The closing ceremony commenced and after the Vote of Thanks and the Secretary General’s speech, the highly anticipated awards ceremony began. Chettinad Vidyashram won the award for the best local school, while the award for the best out-station school was given to DPS, Sharjah. With that, SISHMUN 2014 came to an end, after a successful three days.
