SISHMUN 2013

The Seventh Annual Sishya Model United Nations (SISHMUN) was held on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of October 2013. Around 600 delegates attended the conference, making it the largest edition yet. The delegates came from 26 schools across India and abroad; such as Sharjah, Colombo, Bangalore, Noida, Hyderabad and of course Chennai.

The opening ceremony was held on the 3rd of October, was well appreciated by all the delegates. The Chief Guest Mr. N. Ram – Director of Kasturi and Sons, and former Editor- in – chief of ‘The Hindu’ gave a truly thought provoking speech. He spoke about the role of the United Nations, its strengths, weaknesses as well as past successes and failures. The most important point he made, was to remember that more than ever before, it is a time for nations to work together. The speech truly inspired each and every delegate present. Our Principal, Mrs. Omana Thomas inaugurated the ceremony by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

The three days of SISHMUN saw intense debates, through provoking statements, arguments and encouraged all the delegates to think outside the box. These intense sessions in committee were of course accompanied by a few light hearted moments. The quality of debate at this year’s conference was exceptional. All the delegates worked their hardest and truly acted as diplomats of their respective countries. All committee discussed and passed their resolutions. Day two began with the General Assembly; SISHMUN is one of the few MUNs with this Assembly. It consisted of delegates of three committees. They began discussion of their agenda.

Day three was scheduled to continue as the General Assembly; however there was a surprise for the delegates! A stimulated Emergency situation was created to test the aptitude, skill, preparedness for solving a crisis. The delegates responded to the Emergency in a professional and diplomatic manner, arriving at solutions that truly impressed the Executive Board. The delegates, as members of the United Nations arrived at a solution within the time limit and passed a resolution to resolve the crisis.

The closing ceremony started on schedule, it began with the much anticipated awards ceremony. The Chairs of the respective committees announced their awards; they also thanked each and every delegate for making the three days of SISHMUN so special to all of them. The awards were received amidst much cheering and happiness! Our Principal, Mrs. Omana Thomas and The Director of Ecole Franco-Indienne Sishya, Mr. Christophe gave away the prizes to the delegates. The delegates of Iran from Christ Junior College, Bangalore and the delegates of India from PSBB K.K. Nagar, Chennai; walked away with the awards for “Best Delegations”. Christ Junior College from Bangalore won the “Best Outstation School” award, while Chettinad Vidyashram, Chennai won the award for “Best Local School”
