SISHYAMRITA

Sishya held its annual Inter School Cultural event, Sishyamrita on the 8th and 9th of July. It is traditionally organized by the students of Class 12. This year under the leadership of Vinita Govindarajan and Abhishek Daniel, our Cultural Secretaries and with guidance from the teachers, 12 schools competed for the overall trophy, participating in a variety of events over the two day period. The events tested the participants’ aesthetic sensibilities with rangoli, vegetable sculpture and collage, their creativity with Adzap, Face painting, Dumb Charades, Lexicon, Shipwreck, Mono Acting and Channel Surfing; and their musical and dancing abilities with the Western and Indian Music and Folk Dance competitions.

The schools enjoyed themselves thoroughly in the atmosphere of friendly rivalry, cheering loudly for their participants throughout the events.

After two days of frenzied competition, Chettinad Vidyashram emerged the clear winner of the Sishyamrita Overall trophy.

SISHMUN

The fifth Annual Sishya Model United Nations (SISHMUN-2011) was held from the 22nd to the 24th of September. 350 delegates attended the conference, making it the largest edition yet. These delegates were from 22 schools, from Sharjah, Colombo, Mumbai, Bangalore and of course Chennai.

The day started with a wonderful opening ceremony, which was well appreciated by all schools. The Chief Guest, I.A.S Officer, Mr. B.S. Raghavan who was a US Congressional Fellow and Policy Adviser to UN (FAO) gave a motivational speech on how the future of the world rests in the hands of youth. Guest of honour, Justice Uma Ramanathan gave an eclectic speech on passion and self-actualization. Mrs. Lily Thomas inaugurated the ceremony by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

The three days of SISHMUN involved hotly contested debates, thought provoking questions, and a few light hearted moments. The standard of the delegates was remarkably good; debates were hotly contested, with delegates doing their best to protect their nation’s interests. By the end of the second day, all agenda topics had been debated upon, with resolutions passed.

Day three was scheduled to be the General Assembly, but there was a surprise for the delegates. A simulated emergency situation was created to test the aptitude and crisis solving skills of the delegates.

The delegates from each committee managed to find solutions to the crisis situation, including ones that we hadn’t thought of while devising the emergency. The crisis was solved before the end of the time limit, with delegates reaching a compromise and deciding on an appropriate course of action.

The closing ceremony started right on schedule, and the much anticipated awards ceremony threw up some expected results. Our Principal, Mrs. Omana Thomas and trustee, Mrs. Lily Thomas gave out the prizes to the delegates. The delegation of U.S.A represented by the students from various Sri Lankan schools walked away with the award for “Best Delegation”. BD Somani (Mumbai) won the best Outstation School Award, while P.S.B.B. K.K. Nagar won the award for Best Chennai School.
